Super Excavators started it’s journey in the early 1980s, when Albuquerque was in a boom. Forging it’s path in excavating, Super Excavators grew to do more and more under the civil contract umbrella. Thus, as their expertise changed, so too did their name.
Albuquerque Underground Inc., now AUI Inc., was formed by Adam Triolo, the conductor behind the entire movement. Since 2012 AUI Inc. is now under the direction of Darrin Howells, Patrick Shaw, and Sam Baca. AUI now employs over 300 people, and has civil contract work in NM, CO, OK, TX, and AZ. By being able to self perform all civil scopes of work in house while expanding their footprint, AUI Inc. has proven to be one of the most diverse heavy civil contractors in the Southwest Region.
With work now ranging from Englewood, Colorado to El Paso, TX, AUI Inc. has credited their success to not only their hard work, but also the strength of their community partners who have helped them grow along the way.
“Starting out with a John Deere Excavator, we have slowly transition to having 80-85% of our fleet being John Deere,” said Sam Baca, AUI Inc. Executive Vice President/Co-Owner.
“Albuquerque is a close knit town. We rely on one another to be successful, and have all worked to build relationships. We worked closely with the Tom Growney organization, and were there as the transition to 4Rivers began,” said Baca.
“The transition is one of the biggest compliments I can give 4Rivers. Not to say there weren’t complications, however, they respected the partnership that had been established and worked towards building off that relationship.”
Keeping equipment running is like keeping a heartbeat pumping. A strong support of parts and service across the vast landscape is important to AUI Inc.
“At any point in time, we may need service or parts in a remote area, and 4Rivers has proven they can be there to support us,” Baca explained.
“Knowing that AUI Inc. has projects in areas that would be better serviced by other 4Rivers locations, we make sure to set up pre-project planning meetings to set expectations early for our teams in those areas,” said Mike McCalmont 4Rivers Territory Manager.
“Mike has been great at helping us thinking outside the box to advance our business,” said Baca. “He proactively thinks about cost effective solutions for our equipment to help us come out ahead in the end.It helps us gain an edge when bidding on large projects,” explains Baca.
