Connected to the Land Ep. 7: Making the Most of John Deere Combines & Harvest technology.

The host: Fred Eichler

Fred is a farmer, rancher, and most notably a hunter. 4Rivers is dedicated to you, those Connected to the Land.

Guest speaker for this episode: Derick Kiel

Derick is a master technician at the Greeley 4Rivers Equipment location. He has a widespread knowledge of a lot of equipment which is needed for his job. He went into the 4Rivers Tech program straight out of high school, got his tools paid for and schooling, and now has been with 4Rivers for about 14 years. He says it is just such a great place to work, with benefits and overtime. He has become a part of the family and can’t imagine working anywhere else.

What a combine does:
It goes into a field, for example, corn, and takes all the material into the machine, and it separates the seeds from the trash.

New technology in the combines:

  • The machines themselves are getting bigger and bigger to accommodate the growing farm sizes.
  • Increased capacity
  • You don’t have to do anything anymore
    • It steers itself
    • It sets itself
    • It runs the header by itself.
  • Cameras EVERYWHERE
    • Watches to check the amount of trash/ stock in the tank
    • Looking for broken kernels (will change its settings to fix that).
    • According to your sample, it can help figure out whether the changes you make help or hurt you.
  • Monitors moisture by using moisture probes that are built into the combine.
  • Active yield is an automatic calibration for your yield.

What the combine will do for you:

  • For farmers, it will increase their productivity.
  • More productivity means more profit.
  • It will lower the stress levels by doing everything for you.
  • Less maintenance, therefore less time spent in the morning checking everything before starting to run.
  • Keeping the old machines in the field longer
Inspections are key! Bring them into us.
  • Since they are such seasonal machines, they sit for a while, bringing them into 4Rives and getting them inspected on the off-seasons.
  • The maintenance needs to be done annually, and we recommend at least going through care on them once a year to ensure they are still in good condition. And if any work needs to be done, we have a good enough window of time to fix things.
  • There are upgrade kits now and then. John Deere comes out with a new part for a new combine, and you can retrofit it for the older combine to make it run just as well.
  • Higher-wear components or stainless steel components will help with the life of your combine.
  • Add the active yield technology.
  • Adding any technology to help track data is epic.
    • Tracking the data helps to make better farm management decisions.
