Retirement for Steve Christy

Albuquerque, NM- Written by John Snider, Branch Manager

Normally if a company loses 45 years of employee experience you’re talking about five to ten people.  Not in this case.  It is very rare for a person to work at the same company for as long as Steve has.  Mr. Steve Christy came to work at Tom Growney Equipment (TGE) on January 12th, are you ready…… in 1972.  That’s right 1972.  I consider myself an old you know what, but I was in junior high school in 1972, where were you in ‘72?  My guess is more than half of the folks reading this weren’t even born yet.  That, in and of itself, is amazing.  However in the interest of being totally accurate Steve did leave TGE for a year in 1985 to work for the local Case dealer but he came back in 1986 and has been here ever sense.  A lot has happened since then.  I joked with Steve that he was using microfitche back then to look up parts but he said microfitche wasn’t even available yet.  For those of you who don’t know what microfitche is, google it.

Steve began his career in the US Army (’69 to ’72) serving in Germany.  After he was out he came to TGE.  He said the parts manager quit shortly after he started so he was given the responsibility to run the department due in part to his military experience.  Steve ran the department for years.  TGE was known as a top notch parts department throughout John Deere and Steve was a huge part of that.  So it is bitter sweet that we must say farewell to Steve.  If we get lucky he may fill in a time or two when our other parts personnel are on vacation.  He is not the type to retire to the couch and a remote control.  Steve and his bride Evelyn plan to travel the country and spend time with family and friends.

Steve’s last day employed with 4Rivers will on be Friday June 16th.  We will be having a retirement party for him then. Steve’s contributions and knowledge will be missed in our parts department as well as all of our departments but he has earned his retirement and we all wish him the best of luck!!
